About Me

I think

I think

I think

I've chosen this amazing sculpture by Oregon artist Dixie Jewett to symbolize what I offer the world of communications: Hard work and creativity.

The head of the horse reflects my early career in journalism where I learned the art of storytelling and the craft of distilling tons of information into missives that millions of readers found useful and engaging.

I feel

The body of Jewett's horse illustrates the fact that I pursued communications because I believe accurate information empowers those in need. That belief fueled my work as a newspaper reporter and editor. It's why I'm attracted to nonprofits as a communications specialist. Grantwriting helps me finance the marketing content I develop for those agencies.

I do

I think

I do

The hooves show that I'm a self-starter and I possess a sharp eye for detail, which I use to find even the smallest errors in text. Of course, I'm versed in AP Style. I'm adept at visual communications including photography, design and filmmaking. I work well under pressure and can produce high-quality work on deadline. I have strong interpersonal skills and enjoy working with a wide variety of people.

The Workhorse Way

It all starts with storytelling

I began my career in newspapers, where longer stories were called "Workhorse" endeavors. Daily responsibilities had to be maintained while pursing the bigger picture. Whether I was writing a long-form piece or a daily, the process started with storytelling. That meant beginning with a blank page, or screen, and ending the day with a story that was accurate, clear, compelling and most of all useful to my readers.

Problem solving

Who's my audience and what do they need to know? What is the best way to reach them? Does the audience like technical language or must I break it down? How do I jigger the message so it pops up prominently on search engines? These are a few of the questions I ask, problems I solve, when creating a message for my audience.

Research

Those questions are answered during a thorough process of research. I'm well schooled in gathering often large amounts of often complex information and shaping it into sharp and snappy copy written in language that suits the audience and the medium used to reach them.

Fund the story

A great story may never be told if the nonprofit food pantry or afterschool program for at-risk youth lacks funds to craft or publish their message. Because I'm a skilled grantwriter, I can find the funders willing to build the capacity needed get stories to the public.

Now, tell the story

Whether in print, on the web or in video, I can craft messages and take projects from concept to completion. My toolbox includes writing, editing, phototography, videography, video editing, project management and the Adobe Creative Suite. I also have big ideas. But if my dreams exceed my skills, I can instruct specialists better able to bring that story to life.

That's the workhorse way!
